The latest figures show considerable improvement in most areas of crime in the UK. Now I am a total cynic, I don't believe anything any politician says, nor do I believe any statistics produced by the government or that they have had a chance to interfere with or influence. I don't live in the UK and haven't for a long time, so how do those of you living there feel? Have you seen a drop in local crime where you live or do you feel safer? It would be interesting to get some feedback from those on the ground so to speak.

This is utter cr@p,my Son is in the Met and it's just the way the figures are massaged and the way different crimes have been reasessed and recatagorised. The scum rule the streets in certain places and the Police have their hands tied,to a degree, by PC and health and safety. The heart has gone out of the Police due to cuts and politics. Give a man the tools and he can do a good job, give him half the tools and the results will show this.

I think that many people won't report crimes as they know nothing will be done. Also, you can't find a policeman anywhere anyway so you wouldn't be able to call one over to sort a crime out that was taking place there and then. Also, it depends upon the name of the category that a crime is noted under. If you say there are 1,000 petty crimes and 2 serious crimes it sounds better than if you stated that there were 1,002 crimes. What is serious to an old lady is petty to a younger person I would argue.

Am watching this thread with interest coz have not had much experience with the UK for the past 8 years or so.
What I have noted over the years tho is that 'they' should start fining litter louts - but 'they' wouldn't would they coz that would put the grime figures up.........

Pretty much a load of old cobblers. Lies, Damned Lies & all the rest of it.
My friend's hubby is a copper in sleepy Darzet - even he said that crime has gone up only various things are shifted into different compartments to make them "not crimes" any more, therefore its all jiggled about to make it appear that figures have gone down.
Before we left uk five years ago things were pretty dire already. Our son was constantly in trouble with the police for doing hidous "crimes" like riding his bike on a pavement or - horrors! - sitting on a wall near the bus stop!!!!!! Meanwhile the local yobs were breaking into houses, shoplifting, stealing cars & motorbikes, buying & selling drugs and the police did absolutely NOTHING, mainly because they were too busy nabbing my boy & his friends for sitting in the park with cans of cola!!!! (TBH this ridiculous charade can all be attributed to those useless little Noddy Coppers rather than Real Policemen).
Crime figures down. Clearly they are having a laugh!!!

Ah, those Noddy Coppers - would they be like the 'wardens' who frightened the bejabers out of my mum when I took her to sit amongst some bluebells when she was terminally ill? We'd walked along a deer path so as to disturb as few bluebells as possible - they saw us sitting on a fallen tree and came and lectured us about the death of bluebells and my Mum was really upset!

Kids riding push bikes on the pavement can kill a pedestrian, I know somebody (old guy in his seventies) who was killed in this way. I take it you do not have a bus stop outside your house.

It strikes me that the Police are in a no win situation, they are damned if they do,and damned if they don't.
