My husband is 18 years older than me. We met when I was 39 and he was almost 57. We are very happy together.
This girl was 15 and he was 30 last year when they ran away. I completely agree (and so do my French friends) that he was way out of order running away with her, especially as he was her teacher. However, 15 is the age of consent here and, although unforgivable because of his profession had he been a builder or a banker the outcome would have been different in this country.
I wish them both well for the future and hope that one day all this will be behind them. In my opinion the emotive words 'grooming, abduction and abuse' have no place for this case at all.

on the same theme - I would be very interested for opinions on this scenario -
Male 38 meets female 19 - they want to have the relationship -and they have sex.
Male discovers female has lied and is in fact only 15 (but looks 19)- technically statutary rape. Opinions please ..... and penalties - if you believe they are warranted

That's a very difficult one Bisdu. But doesn't the law differentiate between rape and unlawful sex, where the sex is unlawful but consensual? Uncomfortable as it may seem to some, I don't think you can bracket an emotive word like 'rape' with under age consensual sex. We all know how mature girls can look nowadays and sexually liberated they can be.
In that particular scenario maybe it should be dealt with more leniently in a non custodial way, with a large fine and suspended sentence. I think the girl should be censured in some way as well, as she would have lied and drawn the male into technically breaking the law. Aiding and abetting?

so can someone explain to me how a 30 year old teacher has sex with 15 year old girl and quite rightly gets 5.5 years in the nick but TV presenter Stuart hall messes around with several girls , the youngest 9 and gets 15 months? .

Because from what I've heard and read, the 30 year old teacher "had sex" and his offence took place under current sentencing recommendations. If by inference Stuart Hall only "messed around" with these girls then it was classed as sexual assault and not rape. In addition the judge pointed out he could only give a custodial sentence which was recommended at the time Stuart Hall's offences took place, not a sentence that would be enforced currently.

In my opinion, the sentence handed down to Jeremy Forrest does seem to be excessive given the nature of the offence. A very high percentage of girls under 16 are sexually active, indeed it is legal for doctors to prescribe contraception to young girls below the age of consent without telling their parents.
The girl was a willing party to this and is clearly mature for her age. Forrest crossed the line being a teacher but thousands of 15 year olds are in sexual relationships and nothing comes of it even when they get pregnant.
Forrest broke the law and given his position as a teacher a custodial sentence is appropriate but I also draw comparisons with Stuart Hall who indecently assaulted 13 different girls as young as 9 and only got 15 months.
Perhaps there is more to this than we are being told, but I think on the face of it he does seem to have been given a severe sentence and as I recall he never got bail which all the celebraties charged with more serious offences seem to have managed without a problem. Bill Roache is charged with two counts of rape and indecent assult of girls as young as 12 and is out on bail.

Five and a half years seems a heck of a long time for this "crime".Iknow that technically he kidnapped her because of her age,but in reality she went with him willingly. He didn't force himself on her sexually. Definitely his judgement was hoerrendously bad, but surely five and a half years is far too much. I agree that the word "groom, abduction and abuse" are wrongly used in this case.
A very close menber of my family is married to a man nearly twice her age,the relationship started when she was sixteen and he was over thirty. She did the chasing and he succumbed.Again bad judgement but today they are married and have been together for fifteen years.
