before Mrs T we had 3 day weeks, power cuts, strikes every other week from some union somewhere within a large industry holding the country to ransom
Did Mrs T kill the mining industry that was quickly running out of basic raw materials due to over production ? whoever was in power at that time would have been accused of killing the mining industry - we could not continue to extract coal that was quickly running out at any cost, bad economics
Shipyards were already short on orders with most being sent abroad to asia and far east.
She may have sold the silver but remember it Gordon Brown that sold the gold and Blair got us into wars we would never win
Love her or hate her at least she had principle and the balls to stand up for them - she was possibly the last true prime-minister and not some "career politician"
and the alternatives = Neil Kinnock and Michael Foot ........ now that would have been a laugh
Yep she screwed up at time who doesn't ? her biggest mess up was perhaps her crooked son who dealt in arms, tried to overthrow governernments and was a convicted loan shark ......

So you don't like her John? So what about her good points with say the Falklands? Without her we would have given them away. Yes Thatcher won the war but Argentina didn't suddenly wake up one morning and decide to invade the Falklands. Up to six months before the the invasion, security services were monitoring the situation and misread the signs. They did however inform the Government but despite this, in the following months HMS Endevour, the only British warship patrolling the area was withdrawn. With the islands undefended, Argentina invaded. The war that followed cost 258 British lives to re-gain what maybe we should never have lost had the security services and Thatcher's government been on the ball. With regard to Foot and Kinnock, that is the problem with British politics. The public always end up having to vote for the least worst option because there is never a best option.

This is how I will remember her. There was more truth in one spitting image episode than the lifetime of any parliament.

And as for Ed what's his name he will have difficulty in convincing himself let alone the British public that he could lead anything - spineless pontificating idiot - and best friend of Mr Balls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

She had to be strong, surrounded by men in an environment that was not woman friendly.

I think the bottom line for me is that if you don't like the politicians that are running the country then stand for office yourself and change it. We have the luxury of pretty much anyone being able to go into politics if the will is strong enough.

A little off topic ;but shouldn't a government in power, ensure that everyone, regardless of party politics benefits from its policies not just a few?

Yes of course, in a fair uncorrupt system everyone should enjoy the pain and the gain but when majority of politicians come from a rich privileged background with a public school and Oxbridge upbringing and in most cases no understanding of how most people they represent have to live or work, you end up with a system that favours their own, rewards failure, and is totally self indulgent. They share out the spoils, protect their own interests and everyone else pays the price of their greed and failure.
When Cameron and Clegg say "we are all in it together", that is exactly what they mean. The politicians, the bankers and the lawers are all in it together, patting each other on the back and securing that they will never have to worry about their future whether they succeed or in most cases fail, the taxpayer or licencepayer will always pick up the tab.

I have no opinions about Margaret Thatcher's time as Prime Minister, but I have read and watched with horror the reactions of various people to her death. What the hell is going on in the UK,when people take to the streets to celebrate the death of a person who has had no real role as a public figure for years. It fills me with disgust. She is dead, she can't see or hear what is going on.If these people feel such hatred, why didn't they demonstrate it when she was here to "benefit" from their wrath. Makes me doubly glad to be in France.
