Go for it 4STIX.
The house i grew up in, with my Gran, was one where bread was taken as granted that it would be baked at home. Gran also baked for her daughters who worked 'cos she needed to know that their families had proper bread and cake. She had her Barmpot keep warm and alive by the side of the manchester range. Can remember being sent out to jewish baker or the pub that brewed its own beer for fresh barm if hers died. She also made lots of unleavened flat bread too.
When I left home and lived on my own it took me a couple of years to go back to baking my own stuff as the commercial stuff didn't last. So back to whipping up some loaves and bagels twice a week. I of course used yeast that i begged or bought from bakers until the dried stuff became reliable and made it so much faster.
After many years when I was spending more time working from home I always found that taking some time away from coding problems or design and slapping some dough about was not only therapeutic but helped relax the mind.
Go for it 4STIX is a Manly thing to do.
ps don't use those pansy bread makers! but a mixer with a dough hook is really worth it.

Right watched the latest one 4STIX. So me Grans Barmpot was a sourdough starter kept running for ages, pity I never asked her about it. Remember her starting with a bit of the top yellowy foamy stuff from the top of the brew, from local pub who brewed their own beer.
My mates wife starts her's off using raisins and yoghurt. Me I use un-pasteurised beer, just a bit let go flat.
Hmmm the bagels ..... I was always taught to make the bagel by rolling and then joining the ends not by fingering it. Boiling the bread, for a really good glaze put molasses or black treacle in the boiling water. The amount of time you boil (poach), minimum 1 min per side depends on how chewy the bagel becomes, longer time makes the finished bagel more chewy. Best brush on glaze for me is a mixture of beaten egg and good honey then a sprinkle of caraway seed.
STIX you really must bake some bagels with raisin and cinnamon in the mix, great for any time.
