Regular readers will remember how John P and I were both doing something interesting with our lives during the period of the Olympics, that is avoiding the whole sorry mess!! We both hate sport and said that the lemming attitude of the majority of the population who proclaimed loudly that this was the greatest show on earth, would forget the whole thing within a short period. At the time of all the excitement, I said I would pose this question in a few months time - the time is now! Without looking anything up or doing any research at all, how many people can, off the top of their heads remember the names and associated sports of 10 of the 29 Gold medals won by the UK. I bet most of you cannot get more than 5, if you can you should go and get a life.

Certainly not the greatest show on earth,no legacy left, a little lift that quickly disappeared. The games were diminished by blanket coverage by an extremly jingoist bias BBC.The retirement of the best swimmer of all time hardly being marked.

Well sadly the BBC are still obsessed with the Olympics and hardly a day goes by without some excuse to drag it into a news bulletin, I notice however that no reference is made to the multi-billion white elephant that is Stratford. Anyway it is over now thank God and even the BBC will find it harder as time goes by to rake it back up every day.

I have to admit to not being an avid follower of any sport. Climbing was my activity of choice. Full size scalectrix is the only one I have spent anytime following.
But
I went down to London and spent 4days during the Olympic Games. My reasoning being that I having listened to all the hype and histrionics the only way to get a feel for the 'truth' was to immerse myself in a couple of events and mix with the crowds.
I am so glad that I did, was an experience, and a good one.
Legacys etc I leave for the sports followers among you to argue the toss.
ps The main reason I do not 'follow' lots of sports, (team events) even though in my youth I have played cricket rugby and football, 'tis the crass jingoism and tribal behaviour of the 'followers'; not because of a hatred of sport.

So, with the exception of Bisdu, as I thought no-one else will own up to remembering 5 names, and this after all the effort those people went to? Shame on all you so called Olympic fans. Now if there was similar support for motor racing and motorcycle racing then the world would be a better place (and I don't mean coverage of just F1 and Moto GP races). I bet far more people in the UK and elsewhere are more interested in motor sport than in athletics or swimming - granted cycling here is France is huge and growing in the UK. So why is there so little coverage on TV?

I now know thanks to Dancing on Ice that Beth somebody won a gold for gymnastics and some young lad won a bronze I think for boxing. Also thanks to Strictly somebody called Louis something won a silver or bronze for some sort of gymnastics as well.
