I've been using DropBox for stuff that I want to be able to access when I'm away and GoogleDocs for stuff that I need to share.
The security issue is 2 fold, from the point of view of keeping your data safe from loss then so long as your supplier doesn't go out of business then it's much better than using a network drive as it will be stored with multiple back-ups so won't be lost by either disc corruption or your house burning down. From the point of view of security from theft then it should be pretty safe as your data will be encrypted and while your data could theoretically be stolen it's pretty unlikely.
It's horses for courses, if you're out and about, then cloud is great for general use but I wouldn't want to use it exclusively with the hit and miss conection speeds that we have to live with It does give you a cheap and easy off site backup and that is something that everyone should consider.

I've always backed up to an ext HDD which is fine til the drive goes up the shoot so also, from time to time, save to usb/sd all my photos just in case. Used to use Google docs but got out of the habit. Will also look at dropbox now as work becomes much more mobile. Great thread

We have 2 external hard drives but they'd burn down with the house if we were unlucky enough to have a fire

Whilst I would be delighted to de-mystify the Tekky words used by the computer priesthood, I am always conscious of the 'glazed over factor'. Will do if popular choice demands.........
Please see the attached piccy that i prefaced most of my explanations with.

Just playing with Drop Box literally at the mo. Am only uploading various pics and music that might want when out and about (Samsgung Galaxy Tab) At the mo it appears pretty slow ... Bart - any tips welcomed Deffo won't be using DB as data back-up, prefer own HDDs for that. More later when I've played more

how fast is the upload speed on your connection? The biggest issue with cloud storage will always be connection speed and with a normal ADSL connection giving less than 500mbs you'll notice it..... IF YOU'RE WATCHING..... but why would you? and yes, if you're comparing to saving on a local hard drive you may have be looking at a difference in speed of 10,000 fold
