(Admin hat on)....I always thought Annon, that your intent in writing these 'ramblings' was to enliven debate and encourage more postings. If the result is (as per the last two posts) that members decide not to post further because of the content, your posts are self defeating. I'm all for allowing a lively debate as long as people are civil to each other, but I don't think applying a stereotype to forum members helps and indeed is neither correct or appropriate. I'm not about to delete posts ad hoc and would consult with Ali before taking any action, however lets see if there are further replies. (Admin hat off) Anon - it is my opinion that in your "real life" you are probably ignored/dismissed by those around you and your ramblings on here are just an opportunity to make your presence felt; this is why I seldom engage in your poo-stirring. Sorry Ali - we shall have to disagree on this one.

poo- stirring - that's not what I wrote!
I should have added that I don't really like the idea of deleting posts unless they are completely out of hand and I don't think this one is; we all are entitled to our say whether people agree or not, and those of us who don't like it can continue to ignore it.

Bis : I certainly wouldn't delete anything unless it got really out of hand and not without consulting Ali. I only intended to lay down some rules in case it got inflamed...

Good. It seems to have finally sunken in that your best bet is to stay away and say nothing. No more moaning please.
I'll continue to post in this thread whenever the mood takes me. Sometimes I regurgitate conversations I've had in the pub - No, bisdu, I'm not a social misfit - I feel much-loved where I live - so please stop speculating about who or what I am and my motives for posting. You're woefully wrong.

Picking up on my assertion that we can be no more (nor less) than the influences acting upon us, I reflect now on my early childhood influences, particularly those of my parents, and how, during those formative years, the influences abide with us always....
At infant school, in a neighbouring provincial town, (I lived on the outskirts of a village, in deep countryside, so had to be driven to school) I met for the very first time a black boy, who we'll call Desmond....
Desmond was a happy sort of chappy, with a massive smile, and we became good friends. My parents expressed no view about black people, (who were almost unknown in our part of the country) and so my early recollections were positive, and filled with fascination of black people and anyone from a different background than me...
Later on I came to read Martin Luther King's (Jr) address ' I have a Dream'* , given during the American Civil Rights campaign of the 60's, and in which he dreams of little black boys, and little white girls, walking hand in hand together...
It was impossible for me to understand why little black boys and little white girls couldn't walk hand in hand together. What possible impediment could there be???
And so I learnt that there exists racial prejudice, and that such prejudice is incomprehensible to me. My early experience, untainted by parental influence, or racial bigotry, was a natural, naïve pre-disposition to see people as they are, to judge people, "not by the colour of their skin (or any other outward sign) but by the content of their character"..
Ps: If you haven't already, go read "I have a Dream". May it be an influence upon you.
PPs: What happened to Martin Luther King Jr? He got assassinated for his views. Some honky disagreed with him. So he killed him. Only in America, the Land of the Free....
pps: Talking of influences upon you, try reading MacAuthur's Penguin Book of Twentieth-Century Speeches. Every event which has shaped the world in which you live is captured by world-class oratory. No influence on your existence is omitted. Before taking a view about the world in which you live read this. And you don't have to be an intellectual giant to understand it. Universal Education has given you the means to do it. You can read. But you might have to switch the telly off...

Unlike you I was brought up in the suburbs of a city. We had a number of black kids in our school but I never remember there being any discrimination - we were all just kids in school - that was the bottom line: perhaps it was because it was so long ago - things were different then. It saddens me to see the way people are discriminated against.
As an aside I would say the press are not without blame - I remember the riots in Liverpool some years ago - the press put these firmly down to being race riots - at the time this was blatently not true - these were people protesting against poverty and of course black people are often at the bottom of the pile when it comes to the sharing of wealth, but calling them race riots is much more inflammatory and therefore newsworthy. (this of course was then - different now and not without cause)
