I feel I am very lucky in that we have over two acres of ground surrounding our house. Most evening just before dusk I pour myself a drink and have a wander around the ground. It is very calm and peaceful at that time of day and there is nothing I like better than to take a walk down by the stream and here the water tinkling and the birds settling down for the night. On a couple of occasions I have also seen a deer as well.
Tonight I had been for my usual walk and as it was getting dark had just begun to walk up from the stream when I saw a fully grown deer run out of the hedge on the other side of the field. I suppose it was because I had stopped and it was getting dark but it ran at full speed across the field directly at me. It wasn't until it got to about 6 feet from me that it saw me and turned and lept away. It was so close that I actually turned sideways as I thought it was going to hit me which at the speed it was going and it's weight would at the very least have had me with broken ribs or more.
What a wonderful sight though and one I will remember for a long time to come

Some experience collie but I would suspect you would have had worse than a few broken ribs if it hit you! great sight and a lucky escape

Phew ..... that was a close call, Colly ....... wonderful experience though.
I remember a time whilst staying with my Dad at his place in the New Forest, I'd woken up really early and it was still quite dark. I was sitting in his living room with a cup of Coffee and then noticed several little Munk(?)Jack deer grazing on his lawn. They were really cute........

Don't they bounce those deer! Scares me when the maize is at full height and you're driving along, have seen them in the air coming out of it into the road a few times. Beautiful creatures

Haven't seen any since last year but our hunters slaughtered a whole herd of them last winter so not suprising. Haven't seen a single thing of the kind of thing they kill in a year around here. I did see a wild boar whilst driving back up from the south last Sunday but then saw a row of 4x4 vehicles then realised why poor piggy was running hell for leather through the middle of an open field....

I must admit I am more than a bit worried about the garden I have just started! Up to now there is no damage but I can see new evidence of deer around practically every day. Does anyone know If an electric fence would work in keeping them away from the garden?
