Thanks Barty. I must say I am sorely tempted by a laptop. Never ever had one before but over the next couple of years or so my office at home is going to be moved around while we undergo renovations - it kind of makes sense to prepare myself for being a bit more portable.
Can you hook a laptop up to a larger screen and also plug in a normal keyboard?

If you have a good tower you will find a laptop slow and a netbook tiny! The tower here has just had a new processor, mother board, and graphics card put in it, cost €200. Not sure how old your tower is but maybe a custom refit would get you lots and lots for your money? I have a Samsung HD screen which can be used as a monitor or TV, it is brill for every thing. I agree with Ali seperate sound system is better, had one before but not now as you can set suround sound, etc. Em

Thanks Em,
Its 6 or 7 years old Dell Dimension 2400 it says Pentium (R) 4 CPU 2.666 GHz and 512MG RAM
I did a clear out the other day following a link someone gave me which involved all sorts of housekeeping tasks (over and above the usual defrag and disk clean) and it really has speeded it up. The most effective bit I think was removing Norton and installing AVG which has worked wonders!
I dont have the slightest clue how to upgrade all those bits you said - is it easy? Is my PC too old? TT xx

Norton is not a nice program it killed one of my pc's!!!! I prefer Avast antivirus and it is free. Recomended by a friend I lost touch with who tested software for microsoft.......... As to if your pc is too old depends and I am not an expert but if you replace every thing we did you almost have a new pc lol. I suggest you take it to some one who knows what they are doing as we had a problem with the new processor and it burnt out 4 mother boards, ours and then 3 at the pc shops expense!!!!!! I have a feeling Dell is only compatable with Dell......... Sure some one more expreianced will let you know. Em

I doubt the cost saving when you're doing a serious upgrade of an old machine. As a shopping list for yours to the lower end of your spec. motherboard/processor/ram £200 Hard drive £50 Power supply £50 DVD ReWriter £30 Win7 Ultimate £100 and you've bought a new machine off the shelf, the real killer is the operating system as the manufacturers throw this in more or less for free, altho' for "Ultimate" you'd probably have to pay for an upgrade
