A lot of the noise now is the adults telling the young to berger off and find their own territories - they can be quite vicious with it.
And lib, my softly crooned serenades under bedroom windows sound nothing like owl hoots at all.

I'm sure you are a little nightingale Ian. ;D
(more irritating than tawny owls screeching! ;D).

A lovely story Ali - it does sound like one or all survived and stayed around, doesn't it? We have a screech owl nearby some nights!! Would prefer the "whoooHooo" type, but it's still lovely!

Brought this thread back up coz am absolutely thrilled.
Sat at open kitchen window with lappy and am listening to hooting owls again.
Seriously, we have never had them before here til this year.
This is taking me right back to my childhood when we lived in a wooded area with lots of outbuildings and they were commonplace.
I would love to be walking out there right now. But its pitch black.

we have quite a few owls here and sometimes see them fly by the window at dusk.Love to hear them hooting and am quite good at hooting back-get worried when they get too close though. They have an annual owl watch near to us,but have never been.My french neighbour took her children one year and said it was superb.

We have loads of owls here, too. Have seen them flying around the bottom end of the garden and were wondering about putting up nesting boxes for them .... anyone any ideas about whether or not they would use them, and if so, how big would we need to make them? Does anyone know?......
